Каждый персонаж имел свой лейтмотив, поручаемый одному и тому же инструменту: утку изображал гобой, «крякающая» мелодия в нижнем регистре; дедушку — фагот, имитирующий ворчание; Петю - смычковые струнные инструменты (преимущественно скрипки), свободная и открытая мелодия в духе пионерского марша; птичку - флейта в высоком регистре,  виртуозные пассажи; кошку – кларнет, тема изображает грацию и мягкую поступь кошки; волка - три валторны; охотников -  литавры и большой барабан (изображение выстрелов), духовые инструменты (финальный марш). Перед началом выступления инструменты показывали детям и играли на них темы. За время исполнения дети слышали темы многократно и выучивались распознавать тембр инструмента — в этом педагогический замысел сказки.
