Оеан омывает западные берега северной и южной америки , восточные берега австралии и восточные берега евразии, северные берега антрактиды. Связан с индийским океаном бассовым, торресов пр., малаккский пр. С атлантическим магелановым, пр. дрейка и панамским каналом. Связан с северным ледовитым бериноговым пр. Граничит на востоке с атлантическим, на севере с северным ледовитым, с индийским на западе.
