In Russia, children go to school at the age of six or seven. They spend four years in elementary school, five years in middle school and two years in high school.Classes usually start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3 p.m., although this may vary slightly depending on the school. Younger students have 3-4 lessons a day, and high school students have up to 7 lessons a day. This means that a school week can last 5 or 6 days. There is a wide range of school subjects for students aged 12-17 years. English is the main and most popular foreign language, although students can study Spanish, German or French. Almost all classes involve the use of computers and multimedia technologies. Some schools may specialize in certain subjects, mathematics and chemistry, for example. There are also vocational schools that prepare students for specialized professions, such as music or dancing, along with regular lessons.

The academic year is usually divided into four quarters with three breaks. School starts on September 1 and ends on May 31. Summer holidays begin on June 1 and last for three months, but students in grades 9 and 11 take exams in June. The Unified State Exam is an innovation as a final exam for school graduates. This is a national test combining school final exams and university entrance exams.
