James Cleveland "Jesse" Owens, the youngest of the children, was born September 12th, 1913 in Oakville, Alabama. At the age of nine, his father moved his family to Cleveland, Ohio for better opportunities, as part of the Great Migration. In high school, Owens developed a passion for running and quickly arose as a major track and field talent. While attending Ohio State University Owens proved himself one of the greatest athletes in the world.

Jesse owns left his mark on the 1935 big ten track and field championship in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 45 minutes on May 25, 1935, he had averaged a world record every 11 minutes. The 21-year-old sophomore broke world records for the 220-yard dash, the 220-yard low hurdles, the running long jump, and broke the world record for the 100-yard dash. The next summer, Jesse Owens traveled to Nazi Germany to represent the United States at the XI Olympiad.

At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Owens emerged as an international track star by winning 4 gold medals. He won gold in the 100 m and 200 m dash and long jump. Owens won his 4th gold medal in the 4 x 100 m sprint relay, his mixed-race relay team set a new world record of 39.8 seconds, which held unmatched for 20 years. The strong dominance of Jesse Owens and other African American athletes in the Berlin Games struck a blow against Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, who wanted to demonstrate the superiority of the rest of the world.

After the Berlin games, Jesse Owens chose to go back to the United States to see his family and to capitalize on his new fame. He was suspended by the Amateur Athletics Union for not competing in a track meet in Sweden which ended his athletic career. He retired at the age of 23, later in life, Owens served as Secretary of the Illinois State Athletic Commission.

Jesse Owens died of lung cancer in 1980 at the age of 66. In 1981, the USA track and field created the Jesse Owens Award, the country's highest award for the sport. Annually, the award is given to the top American sportsmen.
