LONDON
1. London is the capital of Great Britain. It lies in the South East of England on both banks of the river Thames. London is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest port and industrial town in England. London is more than twenty centuries old.
2. The heart of the capital is the City. The territory of the City is only about one square mile, but it is the financial and business centre of the country. It contains almost all important English banks and offices.
3. The West End of London is famous for its beautiful monu-ments and palaces, fine parks, fashionable shops and big hotels. The East End is quite different from the West End. It is the district of factories, plants and docks. The narrow streets and poor houses of the East End present a contrast to the homes of the rich people in the West End.
4. There are many places of interest in London. One of them is Trafalgar Square with the Nelson monument 185 feet high. Bucking-ham Palace is the royal residence. Westminster Abbey is one of the most beautiful buildings in London. It contains the memorials of many famous citizens of Britain.
5. Across the road from Westminster Abbey are the Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British government.
6. The Tower of London is one of the most interesting places in London. It was a fortress, a royal residence, a prison, now it is a mu-seum.
7. London is famous for its green parks. Hyde Park is the most popular of them. It is the greatest park in London as well.
8. London is the centre of the country's cultural life. There are many picture galleries and museums there. The National Gallery houses a priceless collection of paintings. The famous British Muse-um is one of the best museums in the world. In the library of the Brit-ish Museum Karl Marx worked at his "Capital", V.I. Lenin worked there too. There he gathered the material for his work on "Materialism and Empiriocriticism".

Aunt Mary and her two nieces live in America.They live on a big farm.The nieces' names are Meg and Nelly.
Today Aunt Mary is at home. She has a lot of work to do about the house. Her nieces are at home too.Aunt Mary comes to the girls and says,"Can you help me about the house?
Meg is reading a book. Little Nelly is playing with her dolls and toy rabbits but she says,''Yes, Aynt Mary.I can help you. With great pleasure.''
Then little Nelly says to her toys:"Goodbye,my nice dolls!Goodbye, my little toy rabbits! But I must go.I must help Aunt Mary.Then I'll play with you.You know, good children must help about the house.
Then she comes up to her sister and says,''Meg,let's go and help Aunt Mary!''
''But I can't. I am not at home.I am in Russia.I am on the river Volga.Oh, how nice it is in Russia!"
So Nelly goes to Aunt Mary."Nelly,where is your sister Meg?''Aunt Mary says.
"She is reading a book, she says she is not in America, she is in Russia. And I want to help you about the house. Then I'll go and play with my dolls and toy rabbits."
"You are right.You are a good girl. And Meg is not good, she doesn't want to help me."
Nelly helps Aunt Mary about the house.Then Aunt Mary says, "Now let's have lunch and then Aunt Mary says,"I've got three bananas-one for you and one for Meg and for me.But you sister is not in America.We don't know when she will be at home.You can eat two bananas.They are for you."
"Oh, thank you,Auntie. I like bananas very much,"says Nelly,
Then little Nelly goes back to her toy rabbits and dolls.Her sister isn't reading her book now.She says, "Hello,Nelly!I'm at home.I can have lunch and bananas now.I know Aunt Mary has got three bananas at home."
"Hello,Meg! Nice to see you at home! But...We haven't got bananas!You were not at home for so long!" says Nelly.
