В отечественной литературе он запомнился благодаря своим путевым заметкам и интересным повестям, но немногие знают, что этот человек был еще и очень талантливым поэтом. Николай Михайлович воспитывался на европейском сентиментализме, и этот факт не мог не отразиться на его творчестве. Анализ стихотворения «Осень» Карамзина лишь подтверждает это.

С юных лет писатель увлекался французской и немецкой литературой, искренне надеясь как-то проявить себя на этом поприще, но, к сожалению, судьба распорядилась иначе. Подчиняясь желанию отца, Николай Михайлович сначала работает военным, а потом строит политическую карьеру. Осуществить свою детскую мечту и посетить Европу ему удалось в 1789 году.
