You've got a letter from your new e-pal Jake. Write back to Jake with information about yourself (100-120 words). Follow this plan. Paragraph 1. Give your name, say where you are from, give a basic physical description of yourself. Paragraph 2. Give information about your school, including your timetable and your favourite subjects. Paragraph 3. Write about homework and other activities. You can use the following letter as an example: Hi Tom, My name's Andres Navarro. I'm from Murcia in Spain. I've got brown eyes and black hair. My hair's curly. I'm quite tall, but my dad is really tall! My school is called San Sebastian School. It's very modern and it's quite big. It's got over 1,000 students. My favourite subjects are art, PE and ICT. I've got art on Monday and Wednesday and PE and ICT on Tuesday and Thursday. I also like science. At school, we've got a really modern laboratory. After school, we've got a lot of homework. But I've also got time for other activities. For example, I'm in a football club. At the weekend I've got piano lessons. Write back soon. Best wishes, Nikita Useful vocabulary that you could use: ear, eye, hair, mouth, nose, teeth Adjectives: big, blue, brown, curly, dark, fair, green, grey, long, red, short, small, straight, tall School subjects: art, English, French, geography, history, ICT, maths, music, PE, science, chemistry, biology, physics, literature, Russian

Hi Jake,

I'm thrilled to hear from you! My name is Sarah Thompson, and I'm from Toronto, Canada. I have blue eyes and brown hair. My hair is long, and I wear glasses. I'm of average height. In my free time, I love exploring the diverse neighborhoods in Toronto.

I attend Maplewood High School. It's a vibrant school with around 800 students. My favorite subjects are English, biology, and music. I have English and biology on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Music classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which I look forward to the most. We have fantastic facilities, including a recording studio for our music lessons.

After school, I usually dive into homework. It keeps me busy, but I manage to balance it with other activities. I'm part of the school choir and drama club. On weekends, I enjoy hiking and volunteering at the local animal shelter.

Looking forward to learning more about you!

Best regards,

Sarah

Read the text and write true or false next to each statement. How many planets are there in our galaxy? That's a tricky question to answer. Are there other planets that support life? That's exactly what the Kelper mission hopes to discover. Reading. NASA launched the Kelper space telescope, designed to find habitable planets, in 2009. So far it has discovered five new Earth-sized planets beyond our solar system. These planets are hotter than the Earth's sun - much too hot for life as we know it. The Kelper team predict that they will need at least three years (and possibly longer) to find an Earth-like planet. The simplest requirement for a planet to have life (carbon-based life like on Earth) is for there to be liquid water (not frozen or gas) so the distance from the planet's sun and therefore temperature are important. There also needs to be the correct amount of air. If a planet is as small as Mars (half the size of Earth) its weak gravity means that it can't hold on to air molecules. If a planet is Neptune sized (four times bigger than Earth) it has very strong gravity and too much air. So size matters too. The cost of the mission is approximately six hundred million dollars. It is scheduled to observe until 2023 but this could be extended. Will we be sad if we discover we are alone in our galaxy or happy if we find that we share it with other life forms? I The Kelper space telescope is looking for life beyond our solar system. 2. The team predict that they will need at least a year to discover an Earth-like planet. 3 The simplest requirement for a planet to have life is enough water and air. 4 Kelper has found five planets that are much too hot for life. 5 There will have enough air in a very small planet. 6 There won't have much air in an extremely big planet. 6 marks
